Franz Josef Mayer (?) Egg Coddlers
The longer
Egg-coddlers.COM
is in operation, the more convoluted the mystery of these egg
coddlers becomes. There might be multiple manufacturers who
created identical egg coddlers and each signed their names to
them ... or perhaps there was one manufacturer and different
distributors. We haven't a clue at this point.
What we do know is that these coddlers are three inches tall, with
the lid screwed on. The lid has a flat top ... no lifting ring.
The pattern on the sides and the lid include roosters, chicks, and
hens.
The backstamp markings are what totally confounds us. Each example
that we've seen so far has slightly different markings and/or
numbers. We really don't know who made these, and for now, will
simply provide you with everything we've learned so far with each
example. Hopefully, someone with authoritative information will
contact us
and help us sort it all out.

| Roosters, Hens, and Chickens - Example 1
|
This example has the following markings on the bottom:
- THURINGIA marked in red
- 4598/1 incised into the porcelain
- 3260 in black ink
- a blue shield with a rose insignia, with the letters
RVR in mirror-image above the shield.
The seller on
eBay
had said that she found the company name Franz Josef Mayer in a book
on German porcelain marks. That company had used the mark number
3260 and was in business from 1832 to 1872. However, that
company was not located in Thuringia.

| Roosters, Hens, and Chickens - Example 2
|
This example has the following markings on the bottom:
- GERMANY marked in blue
- RVR 4598/1 incised into the porcelain
- 3094 in black ink
- a blue shield with a rose insignia, with the letters
RVR in mirror-image above the shield.
Another example is just like it except that the last characters in the
incised marking number and the ink number are unreadable ... so it
could be RVR 4598/? and 309? where the question marks
are unknown characters.

| Roosters, Hens, and Chickens - Example 3
|
This example has the following markings on the bottom:
- GERMANY marked in blue
- 4598/1 incised into the porcelain
- a blue shield with an insignia (looks different from the rose
shown above, with the letters RVR in mirror-image above
the shield.
- Roesler
The seller of this coddler looked up the backstamp in a book of
German porcelain marks, and these markings are associated with
the porcelain manufacturer Max Roesler.
Another example is exactly the same as far as the body style and
patterns. It haas the following markings on the bottom:
- GMT Co. Inc and Germany in red.
- 4598/1 incised into the porcelain.
- a blue shield with an insignia, with the letters
RVR (one of the R's is backwards) above the shield,
similar to the shield shown in
Example 1.
- a shield with an insignia, incised into the porcelain.
The shield seems to be similar to the inked one.
